Lake Nighthorse Opening Soon

Residents in and near Durango have been keeping an eye on Lake Nighthorse, anticipating the day it will open up to recreation. That day is coming in spring 2018. The Bureau of Reclamation with the US Department of the Interior has been working with the City of Durango to develop a lease agreement, allowing recreation at Lake Nighthorse.

Lake Nighthorse was constructed by the Bureau as part of the Animas La Plata (ALP) Project. The reservoir is formed by the Ridges Basin Dam, southwest of Durango in La Plata County, Colorado. It provides water storage for tribal and other water right holders along the Animas River. The lake’s surface area spans 1,500 acres when full, and the reservoir area includes approximately 5,500 acres in total.

Only two miles from downtown Durango, it’s sure to be a real asset to the community and tourism. For more information, visit http://www.durangogov.org/index.aspx?NID=647
