MAPPING PROJECTS
Jefferson County, Colorado - Well Mapping
As part of an effort to establish baseline data on well pumping and water quality in the Conifer area of Jefferson County, the Water District 9 water commissioner requested Martin and Wood to research levels of use, develop a map showing the location of a very large number of household wells in an 18- square-mile area, and to make a presentation to the homeowners interested in the program. The concern was that the growing number of household wells in the area would begin to impact the water table negatively and over time begin to degrade the water quality due to the fact that most of the households rely on septic systems for their wastewater treatment and disposal.
Martin and Wood personnel collected well data for the area from the State Engineer’s Office. The data were sorted and filtered in a spreadsheet and plotted on a topographic map in GIS using the coordinates provided. The map, printed out at a size of 21” x 24”, was used at the meeting of interested parties to display the quantity and spatial distribution of wells, to point out areas of potential concern due to a high concentration of wells, and to depict where monitoring and sampling would be of highest importance and value.
